Living with a boy casually mentioned Duck Rescue 2009 in her last post so we’re swapping Duck Rescue stories!
Duck Rescue 2010

It was a cold, grey morning a few weeks ago. I remember it was a Thursday. I got to work and opened the blinds, not something I normally do, but it was just as well I did. My window is on the ground floor and looks out onto a small, completely confined courtyard. Immediately outside my window was a very confused looking mummy duck and about ten of her ducklings. It was imperative that they got out of the courtyard and to the lake as soon as possible however this would involve crossing a treacherous corridor. So I rushed outside, thinking I would creep up on the ducks and herd them through the corridor. I was shortly joined by a colleague and there was much arm waving along the lines of ‘you go that way and I’ll go this way’. All that we achieved was to scare the ducks under a bush… Maybe this story shouldn’t be called Duck Rescue after all…
It was decided it would be best to leave the ducks alone for a while and hope they found their own way across the corridor. This involved quickly printing signs off to warn people about the ducks and ask them to leave the doors open as well as some precarious attempts to hold the doors open using bins and bricks which happened to be lying around. Someone else came along and got a plank of wood to help the ducks climb in and out.
Later that day I went out again to try and encourage/scare the ducks across the corridor. My attempts once again ending up in a bush. I started brainstorming places to buy a makeshift duck pond and was asking google all about duckling care. Then a few hours later they finally crossed of their own accord. Thankfully before I had made any drastic purchases/life changes! Perhaps it was less Duck Rescue than the title implied but for those few hours I sure as hell felt like a mummy duck with ducklings to protect!
YES! EXCELLENT DUCK RESCUE STORY.
I have no idea why that required capital letters. But it did.
Good work, I’m very impressed, you were much more involved in your duck rescue, I mainly coordinated efforts and other people did the rescuing!! I was going to post next week but I think I’ll have to get it finished and do it later tonight now!
Oh jeez that picture is killer cute. I’ve had to stop traffic before for mama to take her babies across the street, but she figured it out pretty quick.
