Fingers crossed for sunshine!

28 06 2010

Well… I had thought it would be nice to do a small giveaway when I reached 100 comments but the 100th comment was by me in the form of a pingback which was really boring!  I do like comments though :)   It’s nice to know I’m not rambling away to myself and it’s always interesting to see what you have to say.

So, to say thank you, I would like to offer you the chance to win a weather themed set of fridge magnets and a few other bits and pieces which I haven’t got round to photographing (I can be organised about Christmas, just not organised about today!)

To enter please leave me a comment!  If you can tell me how to guarantee good weather for our holiday then I may even enter you twice (subject to the good weather being delivered!).  I’ll pick a winner after our holiday so you have till Saturday 10th July!

Snail mail!!!

13 05 2010

I got home last night to find lots of snail mail waiting for me!!!  I love nothing more than the excitment of getting post (as may be clear from all the exclamation marks)!

I recieved…

…some more fabric samples (I think there is a lot of card making potential with these and maybe some bookmarks)

…a card from the Big Blog Card Swap which is lovely.  It has some gorgeous butterflies on which is strange because the card I sent to Wrapped Up With String also had a butterfly on!

Sew Everything Workshop which I coaxed/bullied out of my partner and which is half price on Amazon at the moment!

…and most excitingly my giveaway prize came from sneezerville.  It includes some gorgeous fat quarters, some wool, some buttons and a couple of lovely looking knitting books; Greetings from Knit Cafe and Knitting New Mittons and Gloves.

I’m so excited by it all!  There is so much potential for everything I’ve been getting through the post (including a couple of laminate floor tiles – I may have got overboard with the free sample concept…).  Actually, there’s a question – what crafty thing would you do with a couple of laminate floor tiles?

An almost photoless post…

4 05 2010

Well… the weekend didn’t go quite as planned!

Lots of food was made:

  • Gnocchi was made on Saturday and half the batch was frozen (am excited to see if that works ok!)
  • Gorgeous soy fish was made on Sunday
  • A chocolate cookie recipe was created and made!  (Well more went to make, realised half the ingredients were missing, then created!)
  • More gnocchi was made on Monday for my sister along with garlic bread
  • French sticks were made (with the aid of the breadmaker! NB some work is required, the bread maker only made the dough!)
  • A wholemeal loaf was made (or rather ingredients were put in the bread maker and the on button was pressed…)
  • A delicious Tunisian Orange Cake was made – it tasted fabulous but looked somewhat suspect because I struggled to get it out the tin…
  • A fish pie was enjoyed

Soy Sauce Fish

This is such a quick, easy and yummy meal to make.

1 fillet of white fish (monkfish or basa work well) per person
1 tablespoon of oil
1 tablespoon of dark soy sauce

  • Cut the fish into pieces about 2” square (but it’s a rough science – just make sure they are all the same size).
  • Heat the oil in a wok or frying pan.
  • Add fish to the oil.  Cook until done (about 5 mins).
  • Add dark soy sauce and cook for another minute or so.

Serve with rice.  We also included some pine nuts this time as a bit of an experiment – they added a great texture but their flavour may have been a bit strong.  We’ll definitely be trying other nuts in the future though!  You might also want to include a bit of garlic or some fish sauce.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Bake

1 packet of chocolate chips (or broken chunks of chocolate)

5 oz sugar (I think)

4 oz self raising flour

2 oz cocoa powder

2 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil

1 3 tablespoon of golden syrup

  • Mix the sugar, flour and cocoa powder in a bowl.
  • Add the oil and mix.
  • Add the syrup and mix.
  • Add the chocolate chips and mix.
  • Add a tablespoon of water if needed to create a pliable texture.
  • Drop the cookies onto a lined baking tray at regular intervals (once baked these will merge together but will leave joins making it easier to break up).
  • Bake at 180C for about 10-15 minutes.
  • Don’t be put off by the very fragile mixture – when the syrup cools it will harden and go gooey and lovely!

I was really looking forward to giving bagel making a shot but completely ran out of time!

In terms of all things crafty I was itching to make a dress but didn’t have any material so I dragged my other half to a shop and started trying to choose.  The other half got bored, wanted coffee and decided to point out (correctly but that’s irrelevant) that I really shouldn’t be spending what little money I do have given that rent, council tax, other boring life related things are all about to be due…  So I got sulky and left without any fabric and hence no dress was made.

Instead I …

… made a necklace

… made a ladybird ring

… started a scrapbook type thing

… covered a notebook with wallpaper (which looks pretty good if I do say so myself!)

… made some coasters using tiles and ceramic paint

… came up with a few themed gift projects and got started on one of them

… planted a few things in the garden (foxgloves, cowslips and something beginning with H which I can’t remember)

… planted some basil

Photos of these things were supposed to happen today but I ended up feeling really ill towards the end of yesterday and just couldn’t be bothered!  Photos will appear when I’m back at home later today!

Oh yes – I can’t believe I haven’t mentioned the most exciting news yet – I won a giveaway from sneezerville!

Giveaway from sneezerville!

And lady luck was on my side this weekend because StuffedNonsense are giving away a little something to everyone who entered their giveaway!  BTW definitely check out their blog if you live near Cheltenham because on the 29th May they are having a ‘Craft Night In’ which sounds great – I wish someone would organise something like that up here!
